A Charleston summer means beach days, picnics, and a very busy schedule. Every little bit of planning goes a long way, and not even an effortless summer day is an exception. So, whether this is your first year in Charleston, or you’re a proud local, here are a few ways to keep your home prim and prepped for the best (and hottest) months of the year:

  1. Clear out the mudroom cubbies/closets:
Grab your rain jackets and warm weather coats, label a box ‘winter/fall’, and move that unnecessary clutter into storage. With the open availability, you now have fast access to your cooler, foldout chairs, flip flops, hats, towels, and a prepacked beach bag. We recommend putting a bedsheet, book, speakers, and loads of sunscreen in that beach bag, that way you’re never scrambling to find what you need. You’ll thank yourself all summer for decluttering and prepping.

  1. Bring the outdoors inside:

There’s nothing worse than being stuck inside on a beautiful day, but maybe we can help. In most houses, the air quality is much lower than it is outside. Freshen up your house with some greenery.

These indoor plants clean the air and remove toxins: Aloe, Spider Plant, Snake Plant, English Ivy, Peace Lily, Rubber plant Your local gardening store has all of these plants available for purchase, and what’s more, they’re affordable! Go one step further by opening up the windows to let in even more fresh air, and you’ll be on your way to livening up any space.

  1. Clean out and restock the fridge:
Next, clean out that fridge of yours and make room for delicious treats like watermelon and lemonade. With tropical humidity and temperatures creeping upwards of 90 F, you’ll be greatful to have the extra space. Drinks like Gatorade, water, and juice are must haves to replace fluids and minerals in the hot southern sun. You can even have fun with staying healthy by making your own hand squeezed orange juice or lemonade.

  1. Revamp the guest room:

Since Charleston is such a great place to live and visit, you’re sure to have house guests this summer. Check in on your guest room and make a big difference with a few steps. For starters, dust—the fan, dressers, everywhere. Summer prep is all about keeping your home light and fresh. Next, open the windows and set the fan blades to revolve counterclockwise.

In warmer weather, fans force hot air to mix with lower, cooler air, leveling out room temperature. Not only will the room be cleaner and cooler, but with fans on, you’ll be less tempted to lower your costly AC. Lastly, replace bedding with thinner, brighter linens to create a breezy beach feel that your guests are sure to love.

Investing just a little prep time in your home will get you and your family on the way to enjoying all that the Lowcountry has to offer this summer!
