Are you considering storing your furniture in a portable storage container? If so, you will want to take some precautionary measures to ensure items are safe and sound during transport and storage.

Since furniture can be one of the most expensive items in your home, UNITS Moving and Storage of East Bay would like to help you make the task easier by offering these helpful tips.

Remove Dust and Debris

Removing dirt, debris, and grime from all of the furniture you’re placing in the container can prevent a headache later. If you don’t remove things such as any sticky residue, it can harden and become permanently stuck to the surface, ultimately ruining the furniture piece. So, grab your favorite cleaner and rag and ensure your furniture is all storage ready.

Protect With Wrapping

Our containers may be specifically designed to provide maximum stability, but we still recommend taking some precautionary steps to ensure your furniture stays damage-free.

All furniture should be wrapped in moving blankets or old linens and bedding to prevent scratches, dings, and the ultimately dreaded broken glass. You should also ensure your mattresses and box springs are protected from any allergens settling in the fabric by wrapping them in plastic.

Be Strategic

The way you place your furniture in the container should be strategic, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.

First things first, you should put all heavy and solid furniture towards the back of the container and then place lighter and softer items on top. That helps maximize the space you have and ensures there is no wiggle room for shifting to occur. Anywhere you see a gap, we recommend placing something there, that way nothing can move during transport.

It’s also a good rule of thumb to put things you want to easily access, such as mattresses, towards the front of the container. It also provides a cushion in case things slide forward.
