It might be difficult to know what you should keep and what you should toss during a big move. Is it worth keeping because of its sentimental value? Do you utilize it on a regular basis? Are your valuables in good working order? Here is some advice from UNITS® Moving and Portable Storage of Chicago to help you make a decision.
Only hold on to what you use regularly and consider space
Consider the items you use on a daily basis. There’s a good possibility that you can do without something if you don’t utilize it very often. Consider how much room the item takes up in your house too. You’ll want to get rid of anything big and taking up a lot of space if you don’t have a lot of room. Ask yourself, do I really need this? If you answered no, then get rid of it.
Get organized
Separate your belongings into categories. It will be easier to pick what to keep and what to get rid of this way. Categories could include things such as clothing, furniture, dishes, and so on. If you have a lot of clothes that you no longer want, consider donating or selling them secondhand. If you want to sell your furniture, it’s a good idea to establish an inventory of what you have available and decide if any items can be sold online. There’s no sense in wasting money on moving it if you don’t have enough room in your new house.
Is it useful and in good condition?
Take a look at the condition of your things. If something is broken or no longer functional, it’s time to get rid of it. For example, if you live in a hot climate, the weather may cause damage to outdoor furniture; therefore, examine it carefully and decide if it’s time for a new item that would fit into your limited area better.
