Storage units, while very practical for all kinds of different uses, can get messy and disorganized in a hurry if you’re not careful. After all, too many boxes of family memories or holiday decorations will quickly get out of hand if they are not placed in the unit by category and use. Organizing can be a daunting task, but if you follow these steps and tips from the team at UNITS® Moving and Portable Storage of Charleston you’ll know how to organize a storage unit in no time!

Purchase supplies and create a list

First, buy all of the necessary items. This will include totes, boxes, tape, markers or tags that you can write on to organize your storage unit, and a dolly to make things easier to move. Once everything is purchased, take your time and arrange your belongings into several categories that will keep the unit organized. Create and maintain a list of all items that will be stored inside the unit.

Store large, heavy items towards the back of the unit

Furniture and heavy boxes should be placed towards the back of the unit on the bottom. Disassemble furniture and place table and legs, headboards, bed frames, mattresses, dressers and cabinets upright and on the side to open up more floor space. Remember to go vertical with your belongings. Boxes should be stacked high with the heavier ones on the bottom.

Place items that you use more frequently in the front of the unit

Even if you are planning a short term move, it is still important to place items that you may need to retrieve quickly towards the front of the unit. Label boxes carefully and even consider using clear storage bins instead of cardboard boxes for these items. Clear plastic bins make it possible to see what is inside a container without having to take the lid off and dig through it.

We hope these tips will help you pack your UNITS container as efficiently as possible! To get a free quote on your UNITS container, call UNITS® Moving and Portable Storage of Charleston today!

Moving to Charleston? Check out these local attractions

Few would argue that Charleston, with its natural beauty, history, and culture, is one of America’s favorite destination cities. Historic Antebellum Mansions, architectural wonders, Civil war sites, pristine beaches, barrier islands, and mouthwatering low country cuisine are just a few reasons why the city captivates all who visit. Beautiful year round, the weather can’t be beat here! Read on to see some of our favorite attractions in Charleston:

Rainbow Row

This series of 13 brightly-colored Georgian houses along the waterfront is a unique sight and an unmistakable part of Charleston history. The homes, first constructed around 1740, were used by merchants who would run their business downstairs and live upstairs. After the Civil War this area became very run down until a local judge and his wife purchased the section of houses. They painted their house pastel pink and neighbors began to follow suit. Don’t miss this iconic photo opportunity!

Fort Sumter

On April 12, 1861 the Confederacy fired on Fort Sumter, located on an island in Charleston Harbor, and the war began. Fort Sumter is a sea fort on an artificial island built to protect Charleston from naval invasion. The fort is accessible by ferry boat and visitors will explore the well preserved ruins with a National Park ranger and browse in the museum store. Step back in time and experience the opening battle of the American Civil War!
