After all, too many boxes of family memories or holiday decorations will quickly get out of hand if they are not placed in the unit by category and use. Purchase supplies and create a list

First, buy all of the necessary items. This will include totes, boxes, tape, markers or tags that you can write on to organize your storage unit, and a dolly to make things easier to move. Once everything is purchased, take your time and arrange your belongings into several categories that will keep the unit organized. Create and maintain a list of all items that will be stored inside the unit. 

Store large, heavy items towards the back of the unit

Furniture and heavy boxes should be placed towards the back of the unit on the bottom. Disassemble furniture and place table and legs, headboards, bed frames, mattresses, dressers and cabinets upright and on the side to open up more floor space. Remember to go vertical with your belongings. Boxes should be stacked high with the heavier ones on the bottom.

Place items that you use more frequently in the front of the unit

Even if you are planning a short term move, it is still important to place items that you may need to retrieve quickly towards the front of the unit. Label boxes carefully and even consider using clear storage bins instead of cardboard boxes for these items. Clear plastic bins make it possible to see what is inside a container without having to take the lid off and dig through it.
