Weather conditions can play a crucial role in the health of your plants, especially when the roots are exposed. The best months for moving your plants are in the spring and fall. Their more subtle temperatures cause minimal harm and help keep your plant safe during the transition.
Before you uproot your plants, you will want to ensure they are healthy and ready for the stressful process. That’s why you should water them the night before you take them out of the ground. This will allow the roots and the soil plenty of time to soak up the water and feel hydrated.
When you’re ready to uproot your plants, grab a trowel and dig a circle. Try to avoid any roots when digging. When it’s time to lift the plant, do so carefully, keeping a healthy amount of soil attached to the roots. That will help the roots feel safe and protected during the transition process. Once they are out of the ground, place the plants in adequately sized containers. If it is possible, make your plants the last thing you move. That will ensure they spend the most minimal amount of time out of the soil.
The faster you replant, the better. Being out of the soil is not ideal for your plants, so you want to limit the amount of time they have to be. To help make this process easier and quicker, try mapping out where you will place each plant in your new garden before you move them.
