Adam is the head manager at UNITS Portable Moving and Storage in San Diego, California.
Adam: We just entered our busy season. This month has kicked up big time.
Colby: What are some of the challenges in the industry this time of year?
Adam: There’s more traffic this time of year. In the mobile storage arena, we have to worry about logistics. Our drivers need to do their deliveries in certain time frames and traffic plays a huge role in that. It’s good to have enough business that we actually have to turn people away sometimes, but that’s also turning money away, so we’re really focused on systems and developing principles that will make it all flow naturally.
Colby: Does the rush in business come more from the commercial or residential side?
Adam: Right now, I’m experiencing a lot of home sale traffic. As escrows are closing, people are kind of caught in the middle. That’s really a part of the business that is booming right now. Commercial clients are consistent, which is awesome. It’s pretty much an automatic process with them. I’ll get a text from one of them needing a unit delivered and I’ll scheduled it right there. The sale doesn’t take much time at all with commercial clients. With home sales, it’s a sale with a lot of time. Escrow closes much quicker and there’s a lot of movement, so there’s stress involved with that too. That can be a challenge with scheduling because once you hand over the keys, not only does the unit need to be dropped off in time to be filled up, it needs to be out in time too. That can sometimes be problematic.
Colby: Over the past month, do you have a highlight or favorite work moment that stood out where the team came together?
Adam: I get wins like that throughout the week! When a challenge arises, all of the moving parts that are involved, you have to think a couple of steps ahead. If a client calls and something changes, that can snowball and affect the rest of the schedule, so I have to look at it and see if I can move some parts here and there to make up for it. I have to make sure I have the driving team that is capable, and also happy.
Colby: Are there events in the city going on that people are talking about?
Adam: We have so many events, especially in San Diego. The weather is going to bring a lot of people out for sporting events, to concerts, to beachside events. We’re looking into how we can capitalize on this, geo-targeting, even placing UNITS strategically in these areas, like billboards with our name and number because thousands of people walking around will see it.
Colby: Baseball is just getting started up, how does that impact San Diego? Does Opening Day affect you guys at all?
Adam: So, I used to manage the Ballpark Self Storage facility right next to Petco Park. Every game day brings an influx of people and that becomes problematic for parking, but was great for exposure. Now I’m based 25 miles north of Petco, so it doesn’t affect the driving much for us unless they have something scheduled downtown. I would be aware of that though and schedule it in the morning to avoid the congestion.
