UNITS of Grand Rapids knows that it’s great to have a lot of shoes, but it can be a pain to pack them. And if you’re moving soon, you may be wondering the best way to pack them, so they don’t get wrinkled or dirty. Check out these helpful tips below on how to move your shoes without any hassle!

Go Through All of Your Shoes

As you go through your shoe collection, categorize your shoes. From there, decide which ones you can donate and which ones need to be recycled. You’ll feel better getting rid of shoes that have been taking up space in your closet for years, plus it’s one less thing to move on moving day!

Clean and Dry Shoes

A few weeks before relocating, check the state of your shoes. Clean any dirty sneakers and then leave them out to dry, so mold does not develop. You can also place unused tea bags in each shoe prior to packing to keep them smelling fresh.

Know Your Essential Shoes

In a separate box or bag, pack the shoes you use most often so you can access them easily during your first week in your new home. You’ll want to slip into a comfortable pair of shoes for the move and have a pair of work-appropriate shoes too. And since you never know when the opportunity for a night out might arise, be sure to include a dressier pair with your essentials.

Stuff Shoes

Never let your shoes fall victim to flattened toes again by stuffing them with socks. Put one pair in the toe of each shoe and another in the heel for extra measure. If you’re traveling light and have packed your socks already, packing paper is a good alternative. But beware, newspaper or colored tissue paper can leave permanent stains on shoes.

Set Aside Delicate or Nice Shoes

Make sure to protect your favorite loafers or high-heeled shoes from scuffs by packing each pair individually in its box.

Bubble Wrap

For extra protection during long-distance travel, add two layers of bubble wrap to each box containing shoes. Make sure the box is properly closed by using tape or a rubber band.

Heavy Items Go on the Bottom

If you have multiple pairs of shoes, such as sneakers and boots, tie the laces of each pair together and place them in a large moving box. Always put heavier shoes like boots at the bottom to avoid crushing lighter shoes like sandals. Fill empty spaces with packing paper to keep shoes from flopping around inside the box.

Separate Shoes by Seasons

Seasonal shoes should be stored separately to make unpacking and organizing on moving days simpler. Packing your winter boots in a separate box or tote and labeling them ahead of time means less work when you finally arrive at your new home. You can store the off-season shoes away until you need them, making better use of storage space.
