Moving to any new location can be stressful and time-consuming, especially if you don’t know anyone in your new location. Because we’re all about stress relief during moves and because we’re experts on the Chapel Hill / Pittsboro metro area, here are five ways to meet new people once your boxes are unpacked.
1. Join a networking group
Networking events aren’t always just about advancing your career. Networking events generally attract motivated individuals and people who are involved in the community. Therefore, it’s a great place to start when moving to a new place. You can meet people that are effecting change and move into more social events with the people you like.
2. Start a club
Want to get together with some parents from your kids’ school? Want to get to know some of the people in your company? Start a dinner or book club! If you love to arrange events, it’s the perfect way to get involved with new people. Start by hosting and encourage others to host the next gathering.
3. Join the Chamber of Commerce
This is a great way to meet people—start with some education! Most Chambers will allow you to attend meetings prior to joining and many host workshops and tutorials to expand your knowledge in some arena. Look into joining the event and start schmoozing with the other attendees.
4. Get out!
If you’re looking for a more entertaining approach, get out and go visit the bars, restaurants and cultural locations in your neighborhood. Leave your iPhone or iPad in your purse. Talk to people once you’re there. If you’re a little shy, invite your most outgoing friend to visit. You’re likely to get into a lot more conversations with that person in tow (and they’re likely to put you more at ease to start a discussion).
5. Get active
If you’re in a warmer climate, head to the park with your dog. Dogs are a huge ice-breaker? Don’t have a dog? Try joining a gym or exercise class. Places like Pure Barre, yoga studios and regular gyms are the perfect place to meet people who are active and living nearby.
