So you’ve made the big decision to update your home. You will add to the value of your investment and improve the quality of life for you and your family. After all, our homes are our sanctuaries, and getting to customize your house to your liking is one of the great benefits of being a homeowner. Now, how to prepare? After doing the research and hiring a contractor that’s right for you, you’ll need to get your house ready. Remodeling can take anywhere from a few weeks to a year, depending on how much work you are doing. Below are a few steps you can take to avoid as much inconvenience as possible when trying to prepare for a remodel.

Declutter The Rooms You are Renovating

You will ultimately need to clear out everything in the room(s) that you are remodeling, but before you get to that, an essential first step is thoroughly decluttering your things. Consider what you will want to put back into the spaces  once the work is complete. Create, donate, keep, and sell piles and make sure you are intentional about what you will hold onto. Decluttering ahead of time will also make the process of moving your things back in place easier.

Take Inventory of Your Belongings

Once you’ve decluttered, you will want to go through the remaining items and take an inventory of what you have. This process will help you plan how much you will need to move and how much storage space you will need. It will also help you make sure that you don’t lose anything in the process and can help with your insurance if anything gets damaged.

Identify What You Need To Keep On Hand

While there are certain items you can pack away for six months at a time, there are likely to be items you will need access to during your renovation. For example, if you’re renovating your kitchen, you are likely to need to keep things like your coffee maker, one table setting per family member, and at least one pot and pan unpacked. Plan ahead to decide which items you can do without (that fondue set you use once a year), and which items you will need readily available. This step will help you avoid a frustrating situation.

Select a Storage Solution

Now that you’ve determined what items need to be stored, do some research and select a storage option that is right for you. Portable storage like UNITS is an excellent option. UNITS will deliver storage right to your front door, driveway, or lawn. You are not charged by the day so you can take your time. You can decide to keep the UNIT on your property during the renovation, or have it stored at our secure facility out of the way. This option will reduce the number of times you need to load and unload. Renting a UNIT is a much more convenient and affordable solution than the alternative of paying to rent a moving truck, loading your articles on the truck and unloading them again in a storage unit. You would then have to pay monthly storage fees, only to rent a moving truck all over again once the work is complete.
