Many of Baltimore’s most vibrant, eclectic, and popular neighborhoods feature rowhomes as the primary real estate.

The signature attached, multi-story homes are typically narrow and expand upwards instead of widthwise. This can make furnishing rowhomes a challenge, especially if you want your space to feel comfortable but not congested. We highly recommend decluttering your space to make your row home feel more open and spacious.

In addition to clearing out unused items from all your rooms, there are other design choices you can make to maximize space in your Baltimore row home, while promoting more light, air flow, and balance.

Here are our four tips:

Choose narrow furniture

Bulky furniture takes up large amounts of floor space and usually make your rooms feel claustrophobic. To create a space that feels more open, consider purchasing thin tables, compact dressers, and smaller sized décor to free up space. Many Baltimore rowhomes have limited natural light unless they are “end houses,” and narrow furniture also allows more light to enter each room. If you want to create even more space, use tall furniture instead of wide pieces. Tall bookcases are a great option.

Utilize your walls

Embrace your walls for storage! Position sofas and chairs against walls instead of in the middle of the floor. This is a great way to increase space for foot traffic in areas, such as living rooms and family rooms. Baltimore rowhomes are notorious for their limited closet and cabinet space, so consider using wall hooks to hang items like brooms, mops, helmets and even pots and pans is a great idea. You can maximize your walls even further by mounting your TV to a wall and using hanging shelves to store small items. Don’t forget to utilize items like corner tables to store items or add a finishing touch. You can even use corners to create special experiences and mini “rooms,” like turning a section of your living room into a book nook or office.

Create a drop zone

Creating a drop zone is very helpful, especially if you have young children! You can dedicate a space near your front or back door to collect everyday items, such as coats, umbrellas, shoes, and backpacks. This allows you to keep better track of these often-misplaced accessories and prevent them from taking up space on your tables and floors. It’s simple to create a drop zone by purchasing a narrow or wall mounted coat hanger.

Go multi-purpose

Investing in furniture with multiple uses is not only a money-saver, but a space-safer, as well. Items like ottomans can act as foot stools and storage for books or blankets. Storage beds allow you to keep items like extra sheets and pillows under your bed and storage chests can serve as tables and toy organizers, simultaneously.
