The holidays are filled with gift buying, parties and family gatherings, making it an already exceptionally busy time. Add moving to that list and you're Christmas could go from fantastic to frantic!

Moving during the holidays is not ideal, but with these tips you’ll be able to stay ahead of the stress and make your move more manageable.

1. Make a moving timeline.

The biggest key to moving during the holidays is to stay organized. By creating a moving timeline that you stick to, you’ll be able to stay ahead and avoid the stress of last minute packing. Our downloadable relocation checklist can help.

2. Pack one room at a time.

Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to pack everything at one time. Give yourself time to pack each room on a specific day or days. This will also help you keep boxes organized and labeled properly. You don’t want to go insane during the most wonderful time of the year!

3. Book in advanced.

Busy, busy, busy. It’s the one word used over and over again by practically everyone during the holiday season, even moving companies. Often times, moving companies will even be short staffed during the holidays. Go ahead and book your movers in advance to ensure you’ll be moved into your new home by your deadline. Our professional moving services can be useful.

4. Stay in regular communication with your realtor, inspector, moving company, etc.

Communication can get lost in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, so be sure to check in regularly with everyone involved in your move to make sure dates or availability hasn’t changed as well as to ensure all paperwork has been approved, sent and nothing else is needed.

5. Budget for dinners out.

Going out to eat a few nights takes the stress out of trying to pack and plan a meal. It also gets you out of the house for a few hours and away from the stacks of boxes you’ve been dwelling over for days.

6. Go to holiday parties.

Don’t deprive yourself of having fun with friends and family especially during a season that’s supposed to fill you with joy! Enjoy your time out and pack around the parties.

7. Stay in the Holiday spirit.

The most important thing to remember when moving during the holidays is to stay festive. Wear holiday pajamas while packing, take some time to make holiday cookies, turn on holiday tunes or light a holiday candle. If you have kids, let them draw holiday designs on some of your moving boxes or have them build gingerbread houses which are easy holiday decorations that can be thrown away after the season. Do whatever it takes to create a festive environment that you can enjoy!

Don’t let the moving grinch steal your holidays! With these 7 tips you’re sure to be able to handle holiday moving like a pro.
